Take some time at dinner one night this week to read this fun fact and then discuss some of the questions.
Did you know...
…that Philip and Jesus were part of a very similar interaction to the one in this week's story all the way back in the beginning of John's gospel? When Jesus first started inviting people to follow him, he encountered Philip and his friend Nathaniel. In his first conversation with Philip and Nathaniel, Jesus tells them that they "will see greater things" than what they had already seen Jesus do.
This week we hear Jesus say similar words to Philip, that he "will do greater works" than what he had seen Jesus do. This conversation comes at a time when Jesus is about to leave the disciples, first when he is arrested and then again after his resurrection when he ascends into the sky. Jesus is telling Philip, and all the disciples, that when he is gone they are going to have to change from watching Jesus do things to doing them themselves. This was a hard transition, but Jesus promised them that he would send the Holy Spirit to give them everything they needed to carry on the work he had started.
Questions for Discussion:
1) What have been some hard changes or transitions in your life?
2) Who were the people that helped support you in that time of change?
3) When have you had to change from learning to doing? What was that experience like?
