Week of August 12, 2018: Hungry for Manna (Ages 0-4)

Faith To Go Podcast: Hunger and Thirst

Hosted each week by the Faith Formation team at St. Paul's Cathedral in San Diego, David Tremaine, Maya Little-Sana and Jackie Pippin, the Faith To Go Podcast highlight themes from the Sunday Gospel reading for you to take into your conversations throughout the week.

Activity Time: Wreath

Supplies: paper plate, construction paper, scissors, markers, glue sticks

Help children to cut out the center of the paper plate. Cut our leaves or hearts from the construction paper and list qualities or draw pictures that make a good role model. Glue these around the paper plate to make a wreath.

Prayer- God, you were present at the beginning. Be with me as I begin (a new school year, new job, new sport, new extracurricular). Comfort me when I am unsure of my new surroundings. Strengthen me when I stumble, and help me remember that your light shines in all places. All this I ask through you, my Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer.

Amen.

Bedtime: Reflections for Children at the End of the Day

During your bedtime routine, invite your children into a time of reflection about their day, maybe by saying, "Did you know that God really wants to know what happened in your day today, and that God is always listening whenever you need to tell God something?" Then continue with these questions:

1) What are some things that happened today that you want to tell God about?

2) What is one happy thing that happened today? What is one sad thing that happened today?

3) Did you see God or feel God with you when those things were happening? Where did you see or feel God when those things happened today?

4) Read to your children this week’s scripture selection, then ask the questions that follows.

John 6:35, 41-51

Jesus said, “I am the bread of life that God gives to you. If you follow me, your heart will never be hungry. If you believe in me, you will never be thirsty.”

Some people didn’t like hearing him say that. They were stuck thinking about the Jesus they knew when he was growing up. “Who does he think he is, talking like that? Coming down from heaven? We know where he’s from. He’s from down the street, from Mary and Joseph’s house.” Jesus answered them, “I hear you talking about me and I know you don’t like what I’m saying. The Father draws people to himself, and those who believe in me I will raise on the last day. I’m telling you, whoever believes already has eternal life.

“I am the bread of life. Remember that your ancestors who were hungry in the desert were given manna, a form of bread God sent from heaven? They ate that bread, but they died eventually like everyone else. But I am the bread of life that you will eat, and you will never die. You will live forever if I become part of you. The bread I give the world so that they may have life, that read is my very life.”

-God’s Word, My Voice: A Lectionary for Children

Did the story remind you of anything that happened in your day today?

5) What are some things that you want to tell God that you are grateful for today?
