Faith To Go Podcast: Our Need for Power

Activity Time: Trophies
Supplies: Play Dough or clay
Have children make a trophy out of play dough. When they have finished, ask they won their trophy for? Why did they design their trophy that way?
In the story this week, Jesus tells us that in order to win the prize, we have to be a servant like Jesus. When we serve others, we have the opportunity to live out all the things that Jesus teaches us.

Dinner Time: Listening
Below is a prayer with which to start your meal and then discussion questions to explore this week’s topic with your family while you eat.
Prayer- God, you were present at the beginning. Be with me as I begin (a new school year, new job, new sport, new extracurricular). Comfort me when I am unsure of my new surroundings. Strengthen me when I stumble, and help me remember that your light shines in all places. All this I ask through you, my Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer.
Amen.
Questions:
I wonder what it means to listen.
I wonder if you are a good listener.
I wonder what makes someone a good listener.
I wonder who is someone that listens to you.
I wonder how you can become a better listener.
Bedtime: Reflections for Children at the End of the Day
During your bedtime routine, invite your children into a time of reflection about their day, maybe by saying, "Did you know that God really wants to know what happened in your day today, and that God is always listening whenever you need to tell God something?" Then continue with these questions:
1) What are some things that happened today that you want to tell God about?
2) What is one happy thing that happened today? What is one sad thing that happened today?
3) Did you see God or feel God with you when those things were happening? Where did you see or feel God when those things happened today?
4) Read to your children this week’s scripture selection, then ask the questions that follows.
Mark 10:35-45
James and John came up to Jesus and said, “We want to ask you to do something for us.” Jesus said, “What would that be?” They said, “We would like to be seated right next to you in your glory, one of us on your right and one of us on your left.” Jesus said to them, “You have no idea what you’re asking for. Are you going to be able to drink the cup of suffering that I will drink, or be baptized with me?” They said, “Sure. We can do that.” Jesus replied, “You will suffer as I will suffer, and you will be baptized as I am, but seating arrangements in heaven? Those are not my business. God will deal with that.”
When the rest of the disciples heard what James and John wanted from Jesus, they were angry. Jesus tried to settle them down. “You’ve seen power plays among kings and rulers, haven’t you? It shouldn’t be like that with you. Whoever wants to be first among you must be slave to all of you. The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to lay aside his life so that all of you could be free.”
