Maundy Thursday at Home

General Introduction

Because of the need for quarantining and physical distancing brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be commemorating Maundy Thursday in our homes this year. We might be with just our own families, or perhaps connected with others via technology.

Below are several worship options for your use:

· The first service is created with a family setting in mind. It would be well suited for younger children. It includes footwashing and an Agape Meal.

· The second service is shared with us by the Rev. Dr. David Gortner, of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. It has more information regarding when and where technology might be used.

· The last entry shares a handwashing ceremony to take the place of footwashing. It may not be safe for some to have their feet washed or to wash the feet of others. If someone is worshiping at home alone, handwashing might also be a better option. The introduction to that ceremony contains some of the cautions that should be in place.

Maundy Thursday at Home

Introduction

Maundy Thursday is a solemn occasion. A candlelit space helps set the mood and can be a focal point for your prayer life between now and Easter. This service includes an Agape meal and footwashing. You’ll want to have the supplies for the footwashing ready, and the meal prepared and set out on the table.

For footwashing you’ll need a basin of warm water. It’s a good idea to put some sort of floor protection down under it so that your floors stay dry. You’ll also need towels.

If you have children in the house, or people who are not familiar with footwashing as a Christian ritual, it might help to explain that in Jesus’ day, people walked around all day in open shoes on dusty streets. When you visited someone’s home, you were expected to wash your feet before you came inside. If you visited someone who was rich, their servants would wash your feet for you. Jesus surprised his disciples by washing their feet.

The Agape meal is a “love meal.” Agape is one of several Greek words for love. C. S. Lewis defined it as “a selfless love that is passionately committed to the well-being of others.” It’s the kind of love that God showed for us by sending Jesus to live among us. The Agape meal was an integral part of the early church’s celebrations.

Because Maundy Thursday is such a solemn occasion, this Agape meal should be very simple. Keeping in mind your own dietary restrictions, consider eating foods that Jesus and his disciples might have eaten. Cucumbers, olives, bread, olive oil, grapes, cheese, perhaps some hummus. As much as Jesus would have liked avocados, tomatoes and peppers, these are all New World plants that would have been unknown in Jesus’ day. It should preferably be meatless.

During the reading at the agape meal, it is best to have your readers alternate so that everyone has a chance to eat.

Option 1:

Maundy Thursday at Home

Leader: On the night before he suffered and died, Jesus and his disciples gathered together. It was an important time for them all, because Jesus still had things to teach them. He taught them about service and how to love one another. He taught them about his body and blood. And he taught them about the love of God. He washed their feet, and afterwards they ate a meal together. Tonight, we remember that evening in our own home. We will wash one another’s feet, committing ourselves to lives of service, and we will learn more about Jesus and his love for us by sharing a meal and hearing Jesus’ words to his disciples at the Last Supper.

A reading from the Gospel of John 13:1-17, 31b-35

Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand." Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you." For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, "Not all of you are clean."

After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord--and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

"Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, `Where I am going, you cannot come.' I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

The Washing of Feet

Leader: The Lord Jesus, after he had eaten with his disciples and had washed their feet, said to them, "Do you know what I, your Lord and Master, have done to you? I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done."

Peace is my last gift to you, my own peace I now leave with you; peace which the world cannot give, I give to you.

People: I give you a new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you.

The Prayers of the People

We pray for the church everywhere in the world. We pray for our diocese and our church. We pray for our Presiding Bishop, Michael, and our Bishop, Susan. We pray for our clergy [n]. We pray for all the people at our church.

We pray for the United States. We pray for Donald, our president. We pray for members of Congress and the Supreme Court. We pray for Gavin, our governor.

We pray for the whole world, especially in this time of sickness.

We pray for all those who suffer. We pray especially for the sick [names here], the homeless, the lonely, and the needy.

We pray for those who have died.

We give thanks for the meal that we are about to eat, and the words of Jesus that we will now hear.

The Agape Meal

These blessings are said first.

Blessing Over Wine or Juice: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe. You create the fruit of the vine; and on this night you have refreshed us with the cup of salvation in the Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Glory to you for ever and ever. Amen

Blessing Over Bread: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe. You bring forth bread from the earth; and on this night you have given us the bread of life in the Body of your Son Jesus Christ. As grain scattered upon the earth is gathered into one loaf, so gather your Church in every place into the kingdom of your Son. To you be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessing Over the Other Foods: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe. You have blessed the earth to bring forth food to satisfy our hunger. Let this food strengthen us in the fast that is before us, that following our Savior in the way of the cross, we may come to the joy of his resurrection. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, now and for ever. Amen.

During the meal or toward its close, the seventeenth chapter of the Gospel of John is read. Pass around the Bible or this document or your tablet so that everyone gets a chance to eat.

After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.

“I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.

“I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.

“Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

The agapé concludes with the Prayer for Spiritual Communion and The Lord’s Prayer.

Leader: Let us pray together a Prayer of Spiritual Communion.

My Jesus, I believe that you are truly present

in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.

I love you above all things, and long for you in my soul.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there

and unite myself wholly to you.

Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Leader: Let us pray in the words our Savior Christ taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Option 2:

Sharing in Maundy Thursday in an Agape Meal

This order of worship for Maundy Thursday is within the context of an Agape Meal to be eaten in homes with others in a congregation that joins together online from their homes.

When Jesus shared Passover with his disciples, it was in the home tradition and setting of the Passover meal.

The washing of feet, the sharing of bread and wine, and the new commandment to love one another all happened in a home, in a room where Jesus drew his friends together as host, teacher, friend, and master who was there to serve them all.

Maundy Thursday may be considered, at its heart, a homely affair. During this extraordinary time that requires us to practice social distancing in order to help protect everyone from the rapid spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, we are being taken back to our households as our base-point. But we have the blessing in this technological age of joining others in fellowship even when we are alone in our households. We can join now with each other on this holy night, as we pray, sing, and hear the Word of God while we eat together, each in our own homes but joined in fellowship.

This service weaves together parts of the Maundy Thursday liturgy within the frame of the Agape Meal as outlined in the Book of Occasional Services. It includes washing of feet, in households where there are two or more people. It also includes the reading of the institution of the Lord’s Supper from the Gospel according to Luke, with responses in prayer from the Didache, and with bread and wine as part of the simple meatless meal in each home.

To prepare your home for the service, please do the following:

1. Prepare a simple meatless meal to share in your home that is fitting with your own dietary requirements and Lenten fast. A Mediterranean style meal is often chosen for Agape Meals, but any foods are fine as long as they are simple. Salads, soups, simple meatless proteins, fruits and nuts, and simple grains or pastas can all be fine. Include a bit of bread and wine, according to what is in keeping with your dietary requirements.

2. Set your space for your meal, with a laptop, tablet, cell phone, or internet-connected screen in the room where it can be visible to everyone during the meal.

3. Make sure your device is connected to the internet, and download any app necessary for a shared online worship gathering where people can see one another. Most people will have had opportunities over this past month to test their sound and video input and output on their devices.

4. Set up what you need to wash each other’s feet. A wash basin, a pitcher with warm water, and a few towels are sufficient. If you wish to use a bit of soap, feel free. Set a foot-washing space in the room, just a bit away from the table. Have what you need for good washing and drying of hands at a nearby sink.

5. Set your table with your meal, and bring a Bible and a Book of Common Prayer to the table with you. If you wish, you may light a couple of candles.

6. Be prepared to clear your table completely at the conclusion of the service.

7. At the designated time for your gathering congregation, link up to your shared online service for the beginning of this Maundy Thursday and Agape Meal liturgy. Then take your places at your table to partake in the meal and to participate as you are able in the hearing of the Word, the washing of one another’s feet, the remembering of Jesus Christ’s sharing of himself in the first Holy Eucharist, and readying ourselves to follow Jesus to the Cross.

The Agape Meal Begins

People are seated at their tables, begin to serve each other, and begin to eat.

After a few minutes, this excerpt from the Gospel of Luke and this prayer are read.

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, ‘Go and prepare the Passover meal for us that we may eat it.’ They asked him, ‘Where do you want us to make preparations for it?’ ‘Listen,’ he said to them, ‘when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house he enters and say to the owner of the house, “The teacher asks you, ‘Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ ” He will show you a large room upstairs, already furnished. Make preparations for us there.’ So they went and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.

When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him. He said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.’ Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, ‘Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’

Blessing Over The Wine

Let us pray.

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe. You create the fruit of the vine; We thank you, O our Father, for the holy vine of David which you have made known to us through your Son Jesus. Glory to you for ever and ever. Amen.

People who have wine at their tables take a drink of wine, and continue to eat – reserving some bread and wine to share at the end of the meal.

After a few minutes, the Hebrew scripture is read.

The Hebrew Scripture Exodus 12:1-14a

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. [Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. Psalm 78

The Psalm may be read verse by verse, begun by the hosting site and then moving from household to household, each household reading a verse together before the next household.

The Psalm may also be sung by a cantor in one place, with everyone singing the refrain in their own homes at the indicated places (see below) – or sung entirely by a cantor.

A Hymn or Song (such as Hymnal 577) may be used instead of the Psalm

People continue to eat – reserving some bread and wine to share at the end of the meal. After a few minutes, the reading from the Gospel of John is read.

The Gospel John 13:1-15

People in their homes move back from their tables to wash each other’s feet. During this time, hymns or songs may be sung and music may be played. At some point during footwashing, the following anthem is said.

When people have regathered at their tables, this excerpt from the Gospel of Luke and this prayer are read.

Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

Confession

The leader then says:

Cleaning of Tables

People clear their tables completely, in silence. At this time, the altar in the church may also be cleared and cleaned.

After some minutes in silence, during the cleaning, Psalm 22 may be recited or chanted.

People regather, standing, at their tables, view an image together of the cross or of the first station in Stations of the Cross, and one by one close their internet connection in silence. The host closes the site last.

Option 3:

Preparation [In times of pandemic/epidemic]

This prayer is a very elegant attempt to protect a ritual hand-washing from antiseptic / self-protective associations and link it explicitly to the second commandment and to Jesus’ care for the vulnerable. - Dr. James Farwell

Leader: We begin by washing, as we were washed in our baptism. We cleanse our hands as we were cleansed in the waters of new birth. We do this not because we are afraid, but because we were commanded to love, and to cleanse our hands, and gather in spirit, is how we love the vulnerable, whom Jesus loved. May we be instruments of love. May the sacrifices we make be for the good of our human family near and far.

Each person present then washes their hands thoroughly with soap and water. Once washed each should help with setting the table as they are able.

O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer; and by night, but find no rest. Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. To you they cried, and were saved; in you they trusted, and were not put to shame. Reflect on the custom of stripping the alter. Is this something that you do at your church every year? The stripping of the altar is not meant to symbolize Jesus being taken away from us, but rather the desolate, empty, lonely feeling that we imagine Jesus felt throughout the painful experiences he underwent after he finished his last meal with his disciples and washed their feet. Introducción General

Debido a la necesidad de estar en cuarentena y distanciamiento físico causado por la pandemia de COVID-19, este año conmemoraremos el Jueves Santo en nuestros hogares. Tenemos dos opciones: Estar a solas con nuestra propia familia, o tal vez estar conectados con otros a través de la tecnología.

Este documento tiene varias opciones de adoración para su uso.

• El primer servicio se crea teniendo en mente un ambiente familiar, el cual sería muy adecuado para niños más pequeños. Este incluye el lavado de pies y Comida Ágape.

Introducción

El jueves santo es una ocasión solemne. Un espacio iluminado con velas le ayuda a crear el ambiente y puede ser un punto de enfoque para sus momentos de oración desde ahora hasta la Pascua de Resurrección. Este servicio incluye una Comida Ágape y el lavado de pies. Le recomendamos tener listos los suministros para lavar los pies, y la comida preparada y puesta sobre la mesa.

Para lavar los pies necesitará un recipiente con agua tibia. Es una buena idea colocar algún tipo de protección debajo del piso para que sus pisos permanezcan secos. También necesitara algunas toallas.

Si tiene niños en la casa, o personas que no están familiarizadas con el lavado de pies como un ritual cristiano, podría ser útil explicar que, en los días de Jesús, la gente caminaba todo el día con sandalias en las calles polvorientas. La Comida Ágape fue una parte integral de las celebraciones de la iglesia primitiva.

Como el Jueves Santo es una ocasión tan solemne, esta Comida Ágape debería ser muy simple. Con sus propias restricciones dietéticas en mente, considere comer alimentos que Jesús y sus discípulos podrían haber comido: Pepinos, aceitunas, pan, aceite de oliva, uvas, queso, tal vez un poco de hummus. Por mucho que a Jesús le hubieran gustado los aguacates, los tomates y los pimientos, estas son plantas del Nuevo Mundo que habrían sido desconocidas en los días de Jesús. Compartiendo el Jueves Santo en una Comida Ágape

Opción 2

Introducción

Este orden de adoración para el Jueves Santo está dentro del contexto de una comida de ágape que se come en los hogares con otros, en una congregación que se une en línea desde sus hogares.

Cuando Jesús compartió la Pascua con sus discípulos, lo hizo un hogar como tradicionalmente se celebraba la comida de la Pascua. 13 »”La sangre les servirá para que ustedes señalen las casas donde se encuentren. Y así, cuando yo hiera de muerte a los egipcios, ninguno de ustedes morirá, pues veré la sangre y pasaré de largo. 14 Éste es un día que ustedes deberán recordar y celebrar con una gran fiesta en honor del Señor.

Salmo 78

El salmo se puede leer verso por verso, comenzando por el sitio de acogida y luego pasando de un hogar a otro, cada hogar leyendo un verso juntos antes del siguiente hogar.

El salmo también puede ser cantado por un cantor en un lugar, con todos cantando el estribillo en sus propios hogares en los lugares indicados (ver más abajo), o cantado completamente por un cantor.

Se puede usar un himno o canción en lugar del salmo

1 Pueblo mío, atiende a mi enseñanza; ¡inclínate a escuchar lo que te digo! 2 Voy a hablar por medio de refranes; diré cosas que han estado en secreto desde tiempos antiguos. 3 Lo que hemos oído y sabemos y nuestros padres nos contaron, 4 no lo ocultaremos a nuestros hijos. Con las generaciones futuras alabaremos al Señor y hablaremos de su poder y maravillas.

5 Dios estableció una ley para Jacob; puso una norma de conducta en Israel,

y ordenó a nuestros antepasados que la enseñaran a sus descendientes, 6 para que la conocieran las generaciones futuras, los hijos que habían de nacer, y que ellos, a su vez, la enseñaran a sus hijos; 7 para que tuvieran confianza en Dios y no olvidaran lo que él había hecho; para que obedecieran sus mandamientos 8 y no fueran como sus antepasados,

rebeldes y necios, faltos de firmeza en su corazón y espíritu; ¡generación infiel a Dios!

9 Los de la tribu de Efraín, que estaban armados con arcos y flechas, dieron la espalda el día del combate; 10 no respetaron su alianza con Dios ni quisieron obedecer sus enseñanzas. 11 Se olvidaron de lo que él había hecho, de las maravillas que les hizo ver. 12 Dios hizo maravillas delante de sus padres en la región de Soan, que está en Egipto: 13 partió en dos el mar, y los hizo pasar por él, deteniendo el agua como un muro. 14 De día los guió con una nube, y de noche con luz de fuego. 15 En el desierto partió en dos las peñas, y les dio a beber agua en abundancia. 16 ¡Dios hizo brotar de la peña un torrente de aguas caudalosas!

17 Pero ellos siguieron pecando contra Dios; se rebelaron contra el Altísimo en el desierto. 18 Quisieron ponerle a prueba pidiendo comida a su antojo. 19 Hablaron contra él, diciendo: «¿Acaso puede Dios servir una mesa en el desierto? 20 Es verdad que Dios partió la peña, que de ella brotó agua como un río, y que la tierra se inundó; pero, ¿podrá dar también pan? ¿Podrá dar carne a su pueblo?»

21 Cuando el Señor oyó esto, se enojó; ¡su furor, como un fuego, se encendió contra Jacob! 22 Porque no confiaron en Dios ni creyeron en su ayuda. 23 Sin embargo, Dios dio órdenes a las nubes y abrió las puertas del cielo; 24 ¡hizo llover sobre su pueblo el maná, trigo del cielo, para que comieran! 25 ¡El hombre comió pan de ángeles! ¡Dios les dio de comer en abundancia! 26 El viento del este y el viento del sur soplaron en el cielo; ¡Dios los trajo con su poder! 27 Hizo llover carne sobre su pueblo; ¡llovieron aves como arena del mar! 28 Dios las hizo caer en medio del campamento y alrededor de las tiendas de campaña. 29 Y comieron hasta hartarse, y así Dios les cumplió su deseo. 30 Pero aún no habían calmado su apetito, todavía tenían la comida en la boca, 31 cuando el furor de Dios cayó sobre ellos y mató a los hombres más fuertes. ¡Hizo morir a los mejores hombres de Israel!

32 A pesar de todo, volvieron a pecar; no creyeron en las maravillas de Dios. 33 Por eso Dios puso fin a sus vidas como si fueran un suspiro y en medio de un terror espantoso. 34 Si Dios los hacía morir, entonces lo buscaban; se volvían a él y lo buscaban sin descanso; 35 entonces se acordaban del Dios altísimo que los protegía y los rescataba. 36 Pero con su boca y su lengua le decían hermosas mentiras, 37 pues nunca le fueron sinceros ni fieles a su alianza.

38 Pero Dios tenía compasión, perdonaba su maldad y no los destruía; muchas veces hizo a un lado el enojo y no se dejó llevar por la furia. 39 Dios se acordó de que eran simples hombres; de que eran como el viento, que se va y no vuelve.

40 ¡Cuántas veces desobedecieron a Dios y le causaron dolor en el desierto! 41 Pero volvían a ponerlo a prueba; ¡entristecían al Santo de Israel! 42 No se acordaron de aquel día cuando Dios, con su poder, los salvó del enemigo; 43 cuando en los campos de Soan, en Egipto, hizo cosas grandes y asombrosas; 44 cuando convirtió en sangre los ríos, y los egipcios no pudieron beber de ellos. 45 Mandó sobre ellos tábanos y ranas, que todo lo devoraban y destruían; 46 entregó a la langosta las cosechas por las que ellos habían trabajado. 47 Con granizo y escarcha destruyó sus higueras y sus viñas. 48 Sus vacas y sus ovejas murieron bajo el granizo y los rayos. 49 Dios les envió la furia de su enojo: furor, condenación y angustia,

como mensajeros de calamidades. 50 ¡Dio rienda suelta a su furor! No les perdonó la vida, sino que los entregó a la muerte; 51 ¡hizo morir en Egipto mismo al primer hijo de toda familia egipcia!

52 Sacó a Israel como a un rebaño de ovejas; llevó a su pueblo a través del desierto. 53 Los llevó con paso seguro para que no tuvieran miedo, pero a sus enemigos el mar los cubrió. 54 Dios trajo a su pueblo a su tierra santa, ¡A las montañas que él mismo conquistó! 55 Quitó a los paganos de la vista de Israel; repartió la tierra en lotes entre sus tribus, y las hizo vivir en sus campamentos.

56 Pero ellos pusieron a prueba al Dios altísimo rebelándose contra él

y desobedeciendo sus mandatos; 57 pues, lo mismo que sus padres, lo abandonaron y le fueron infieles; ¡se torcieron igual que un arco falso! 58 Lo hicieron enojar con sus altares paganos; adorando ídolos, lo provocaron a celos. 59 Dios se enojó al ver esto, y rechazó por completo a Israel, 60 y abandonó el santuario de Siló, que era su casa entre los hombres. 61 Permitió que sus enemigos capturaran el símbolo de su gloria y su poder. 62 Tan furioso estaba contra su pueblo, que los entregó a la espada del enemigo. 63 Los muchachos murieron quemados; ¡no hubo canción de bodas para las novias! 64 Los sacerdotes murieron a filo de espada, y sus viudas no los lloraron.

65 Pero despertó el Señor, como de un sueño, como guerrero que vuelve en sí del vino, 66 y derrotó a sus enemigos, y los hizo huir; ¡los cubrió de vergüenza para siempre! 67 Rechazó además a la casa de José, y no escogió a la tribu de Efraín; 68 eligió en cambio a la tribu de Judá y a su amado monte Sión. 69 Construyó un santuario, alto como el cielo, y lo afirmó para siempre, como a la tierra. 70 Escogió a su siervo David, el que era pastor de ovejas; 71 lo quitó de andar tras los rebaños, para que cuidara a su pueblo, para que fuera pastor de Israel. 72 Y David cuidó del pueblo de Dios; los cuidó y los dirigió con mano hábil y corazón sincero.

El Pueblo continúa comiendo, reservando pan y vino para compartir al final de la comida. Después de unos minutos, se lee la lectura del Evangelio de Juan.

El Evangelio de Juan 13: 1-15

Era antes de la fiesta de la Pascua, y Jesús sabía que había llegado la hora de que él dejara este mundo para ir a reunirse con el Padre. Él siempre había amado a los suyos que estaban en el mundo, y así los amó hasta el fin. 2-4 El diablo ya había metido en el corazón de Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, la idea de traicionar a Jesús. Jesús sabía que había venido de Dios, que iba a volver a Dios y que el Padre le había dado toda autoridad; así que, mientras estaban cenando, se levantó de la mesa, se quitó la capa y se ató una toalla a la cintura. 5 Luego echó agua en una palangana y se puso a lavar los pies de los discípulos y a secárselos con la toalla que llevaba a la cintura. 6 Cuando iba a lavarle los pies a Simón Pedro, éste le dijo: Señor, ¿tú me vas a lavar los pies a mí? 7 Jesús le contestó: Ahora no entiendes lo que estoy haciendo, pero después lo entenderás. 8 Pedro le dijo: ¡Jamás permitiré que me laves los pies! Respondió Jesús: Si no te los lavo, no podrás ser de los míos. 9 Simón Pedro le dijo: ¡Entonces, Señor, no me laves solamente los pies, sino también las manos y la cabeza! 10 Pero Jesús le contestó: El que está recién bañado no necesita lavarse más que los pies, porque está todo limpio. Y ustedes están limpios, aunque no todos. 11 Dijo: «No están limpios todos», porque sabía quién lo iba a traicionar. 12 Después de lavarles los pies, Jesús volvió a ponerse la capa, se sentó otra vez a la mesa y les dijo: ¿Entienden ustedes lo que les he hecho? 13 Ustedes me llaman Maestro y Señor, y tienen razón, porque lo soy. 14 Pues si yo, el Maestro y Señor, les he lavado a ustedes los pies, también ustedes deben lavarse los pies unos a otros. 15 Yo les he dado un ejemplo, para que ustedes hagan lo mismo que yo les he hecho.

Las personas en sus hogares se alejan de sus mesas para lavarse los pies.

Durante este tiempo, se pueden cantar himnos o canciones y se puede reproducir música. En algún momento durante el lavado de pies, se dice la siguiente antífona.

Si toman la opción de lavarse las manos, el líder dice la siguiente oración:

Líder Comenzamos lavándonos, cuando fuimos lavados en nuestro bautismo. Nos lavamos las manos como fuimos lavados en las aguas del nuevo nacimiento. No hacemos esto porque tengamos miedo, sino porque se nos ordenó amar: lavando nuestras manos y uniéndonos en espíritu, es así como amamos a los vulnerables, a quienes Jesús también ama. Que seamos instrumentos de amor. Que los sacrificios que hacemos sean por el bien de nuestra familia humana cerca y lejos.

Cada persona presente se lava bien las manos con agua y jabón. Una vez lavados, cada uno debería ayudar a poner la mesa como puedan.

Las personas se lavan las manos, regresan a sus mesas y terminan sus comidas juntas.

Cuando las personas se han reunido en sus mesas, se lee este extracto del Evangelio de Lucas 22 y una oración.

19 Después tomó el pan en sus manos y, habiendo dado gracias a Dios, lo partió y se lo dio a ellos, diciendo: Esto es mi cuerpo, entregado a muerte en favor de ustedes. Hagan esto en memoria de mí. 20 Lo mismo hizo con la copa después de la cena, diciendo: Esta copa es la nueva alianza confirmada con mi sangre, la cual es derramada en favor de ustedes. 21 Pero ahora la mano del que me va a traicionar está aquí, con la mía, sobre la mesa. 22 Pues el Hijo del hombre ha de recorrer el camino que se le ha señalado, pero ¡ay de aquel que lo traiciona! 23 Entonces comenzaron a preguntarse unos a otros quién sería el traidor.

24 Los discípulos tuvieron una discusión sobre cuál de ellos debía ser considerado el más importante. 25 Jesús les dijo: «Entre los paganos, los reyes gobiernan con tiranía a sus súbditos, y a los jefes se les da el título de benefactores. 26 Pero ustedes no deben ser así. Al contrario, el más importante entre ustedes tiene que hacerse como el más joven, y el que manda tiene que hacerse como el que sirve. 27 Pues ¿quién es más importante, el que se sienta a la mesa a comer o el que sirve? ¿Acaso no lo es el que se sienta a la mesa? En cambio yo estoy entre ustedes como el que sirve.

Bendición sobre el pan

Oremos.

Bendito seas, oh Señor nuestro Dios, Rey del universo, que nos das pan de la tierra. Te damos gracias, oh Padre nuestro, por la vida y el conocimiento que nos has dado a conocer a través de tu Hijo Jesús. En esta noche recordamos su entrega de nosotros como el pan de vida y la copa de salvación. Como el grano esparcido sobre la tierra se junta en un pan, así tu iglesia se reúne en cada lugar en el Reino de tu Hijo. A ti sea la gloria y el poder por los siglos de los siglos. Amen

Las personas se reúnen, de pie, en sus mesas, ven juntas una imagen de la cruz o de la primera estación de las Estaciones de la Cruz, y una a una cierran su conexión a Internet en silencio. El anfitrión cierra el sitio al final.
