Reflect and Act:
If this week's gospel we hear the story of Jesus being tempter by the devil after spending 40 days in the desert. Over the course of those forty days Jesus is hungry, tired, tempted, lonely, and forced to come face to face with his calling and identity. It is in this elongated time of discomfort in the desert that Jesus prepares for the ministry that lies ahead of him; one of challenging unjust systems, healing people, and teaching about the liberating love of God.
In this week's news story we read about legislation that seeks to remove discomfort from schools by keeping students and teachers from engaging in subjects that might bring up any painful or challenging feelings. What do you think is lost when discomfort is avoided at all cost? In what ways might you be avoiding discomfort in your life? Where do you see people avoiding discomfort in your community? How might you invite people in your community into uncomfortable conversations to bring about justice, healing, and liberation? Take some time to share you experiences and/or ideas with your group.
