Week of August 18, 2019: Peace From The Ashes (Ages 0-4)

Updated: Mar 25, 2020

Hosted each week by the Faith To Go team in the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, David Tremaine, Maya Little-Sana and Charlette Preslar, the Faith To Go Podcast highlight themes from the Sunday Gospel reading for you to take into your faith discussions and reflections throughout the week.

Activity Time: Follow The Leader

Supplies: None needed

This activity is from Sermons4Kids.

Choose a leader to run a race but those that follow the leader must race the same way the leader chooses, such as hopping, jumping, crawling, running, flying with arms out, etc. Continue to play as time allows and continue to change "leaders" so that everyone can have an opportunity to be a race leader if they'd like to be.

Story Time: The New Humanity

Watch this video together and then use the discussion questions below to reflect as a family.

Discussion Questions:

1) I wonder what the two parts are.

2) I wonder what humans are.

3) I wonder what transforms our bodies.

4) I wonder what God promises.

5) I wonder how we become new humans.

Dinner Time: Back To School

Below is a prayer with which to start your meal and then discussion questions to explore this week’s topic with your family while you eat.

Prayer-

The days are getting longer.

Keep your Spirit in my heart and mind

during this growing season.

Be with me as I finish the school year,

participate in summer activities,

enjoy the gift of summer turning into fall.

Help me recognize your works in all that I do

at work,

at rest,

and at play,

so that I can give thanks for all you provide,

even without my even asking.

Questions 0-4 years old

1. I wonder how you feel about school or day care starting.

2. I wonder what you are looking forward to this year.

3. I wonder what you are nervous about.

4. I wonder what sort of groups, classes, teams, you are divided into.

5. I wonder how Jesus feels about those divisions.

Bedtime: Reflections for Children at the End of the Day

During your bedtime routine, invite your children into a time of reflection about their day, maybe by saying, "Did you know that God really wants to know what happened in your day today, and that God is always listening whenever you need to tell God something?" Then continue with these questions:

1) What are some things that happened today that you want to tell God about?

2) What is one happy thing that happened today? What is one sad thing that happened today?

3) Did you see God or feel God with you when those things were happening? Where did you see or feel God when those things happened today?

4) Read to your children this week’s scripture selection, then ask the questions that follows.

Luke 12:49-56

Jesus said, "I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided:

father against son

and son against father,

mother against daughter

and daughter against mother,

mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law

and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

He also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, `It is going to rain'; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, `There will be scorching heat'; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?"

Did the story remind you of anything that happened in your day today?

5) What are some things that you want to tell God that you are grateful for today?
