In 'Mothercoin,' the labor of love transcends borders
Reflect and Act:
In the gospel this week Jesus gives his the disciples the command to love one another as he had loved them. The love with which Jesus had loved them, though, was multifaceted, complex, and dynamic since over the course of his ministry Jesus seemed to fill multiple roles with the disciples. He was their teacher and their friend. He was their travelling companion and their rabbi. He was their messiah and yet ate with them as a peer. He was their sibling and yet, in this gospel, he refers to them as "little children." As many roles as Jesus filled, he loved them in just as many ways. And not only them, but the ones he argues with, the ones who deserted him, and even the one who betrayed him.
In this week's article we hear about the dynamic, complex, multifaceted realities of love from women who have migrated to the US (primarily from Mexico and Central America) and work as nannies, taking care of other people's children in order to support their own. In her new book Mothercoin: The Stories of Immigrant Nannies, Elizabeth Cummins Muñoz
chronicles the stories of these women and the challenges they face in the US. These stories illustrate the infinite complications of love, the many ways we love one another, and the many ways we are called to love one another better.
