In the gospel this week Jesus talks about his desire to bring fire and division to the earth, rather than peace. He says that in a five person household two will be set against three and three against two. He then goes on to urge people to pay attention to the signs of when seasons are changing, when old things are coming to an end and new things are being born. Jesus seems to know that unless there is conflict, and a household is divided and enters into dialogue amongst itself, the seasons will not change, old things will not pass away, and there will be no room for newness to emerge.
This week's article highlights an ongoing conversation taking place within New Zealand around its destructive colonial history, that histories ongoing effects on the indigenous peoples there, and new ways of being together moving forward now that the histories that divided can be faced honestly and openly. Where is conflict creating important dialogue in your community? What is the newness trying to emerge from that conflict? How can you take part in a small way in that dialogue?
