Take some time at dinner one night this week to read this fun fact and then discuss some of the questions.
Did you know...
…that this week's gospel uses a word that was also used in the very beginning of the bible? When Jesus is speaking to the voices troubling the Gerasene man they ask him to not send them back to the 'abyss,' but this word 'abyss' is also used in the story of creation for the 'deep,' as in, "God's spirit moved over the face of the deep."
The 'deep' in the creation story is described as being formless and void, like murky water that has no bottom. It just goes on forever. Its out of this deep that God creates everything and calls forth all living things and all of creation. It is a place where anything can happen, where nothing is for sure, and where things aren't always clear. I wonder why the voices didn't want to go back there.
Questions for Discussion:
1) What is hard about not knowing what is going to happen?
2) Is there something going on right now that you're worried about because you don't know how it will end?
3) When was a time that you weren't sure how things would turn out? What ended up happening? How did it change you?
