In the gospel this week Jesus sends out 72 disciples to go into the towns he plans to travel through and share their witness to the kingdom of God. He tells them to show up, proclaim peace, and then dwell in the places that accept them to share with them their story, the things they have learned from Jesus and seen him do, and share the ways the kingdom of God has changed their lives, all for the sake of working toward inviting people and communities into this radical new vision of being together. This will not always be a peaceful process, and will include rejection, as Jesus shows, but the work will be worth it, and sharing stories will always create space for God to work in people, places, and communities.
In the article this week we see the prophetic voice and work of Secretary Deb Haaland (Department of the Interior) in action, pushing for the US to have an honest conversation about the legacy of Indigenous boarding schools, and the painful truths of that history. She knows, as did Jesus, that sharing stories, and doing so for the sake of naming unjust systems and histories, is the path to ushering in the equity and justice of the kingdom of heaven.
