Week of October 6, 2019: A Humble Faith (Ages 0-4)

Updated: Mar 25, 2020

Hosted each week by the Faith To Go team in the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, David Tremaine, Maya Little-Sana and Charlette Preslar, the Faith To Go Podcast highlight themes from the Sunday Gospel reading for you to take into your faith discussions and reflections throughout the week.

Activity Time: Wildflower Seed Bomb

Supplies: 4 oz Air Dry Clay, 1 oz Potting Soil, 1 oz Flower Seeds (please try to use native wildflower seeds)

How to Make Seed Bombs

1. On a paper plate, spread out the clay to be large enough to pour on your dirt.

2. Pour the dirt on the clay and then pour the seeds on top of it.

3. Fold the edges together, and then knead the clay until everything is completely

mixed.

4. Roll into a log, and then cut into half inch pieces with a plastic knife.

5. Dry overnight, and then toss into the areas where you want to watch your plants

grow.

Story Time: What is Faith?

Watch this video together and then use the discussion questions below to reflect as a family.

Discussion Questions:

1) Were the kids in this video silly?

2) What were they talking about?

3) What was your favorite part?

4) I wonder if you know what faith means?

5) Can you think of people who help you with your faith?

Dinner Time: What We Eat

Below is a prayer with which to start your meal and then discussion questions to explore this week’s topic with your family while you eat.

Prayer-

Dear God, Thank you for this food on our table. Help us to remember that many of these things grew from little seeds. They grew because they had water, and sunlight, and good soil. Help us to remember to take care of our faith too. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Questions:

1. What is your favorite vegetable to eat?

2. How does it grow?

3. Who do you think grows it?

4. How did it get here? Who cooks it for you

5. I wonder what you think about all of the people who made this food possible?

Bedtime: Reflections for Children at the End of the Day

During your bedtime routine, invite your children into a time of reflection about their day, maybe by saying, "Did you know that God really wants to know what happened in your day today, and that God is always listening whenever you need to tell God something?" Then continue with these questions:

1) What are some things that happened today that you want to tell God about?

2) What is one happy thing that happened today? What is one sad thing that happened today?

3) Did you see God or feel God with you when those things were happening? Where did you see or feel God when those things happened today?

4) Read to your children this week’s scripture selection, then ask the questions that follows.

Gospel Luke 17:5-10 (God’s Word, My Voice)

The apostles said to Jesus, “Give us more faith. We want more faith!” And they started changing, “More faith. More faith. More faith.”

Jesus replied, “If you only knew how little faith you actually need -- as much as this tiny seed -- and you could do anything! You could talk to this tree and tell it to go jump in the lake, and it would.

“Which one of you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Forget about getting me my dinner. Come over here and sit down.’?

“Would you not rather say to him, ‘Bring me some good food and something good to drink, and afterwards you can sit and feed yourself’?

“Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? Isn’t that his job? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘Aw, it was nothing. I only did what I was supposed to do!’”

Did the story remind you of anything that happened in your day today?

5) What are some things that you want to tell God that you are grateful for today?
