DINNER: Why does Jesus ride on a donkey?

Take some time at dinner one night this week to read this fun fact and then discuss some of the questions.

Did you know...

…that Jesus didn't just ride into Jerusalem on a donkey in this week's story because it was the only animal he could find? No, he did it in order to fulfill a prophesy. In the book of Zechariah, there is a prophesy that a great king will ride into Jerusalem and lead the Jewish people to freedom:

Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion!

Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem!

Lo, your king comes to you;

triumphant and victorious is he,

humble and riding on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

The author of Luke's gospel thought it was important to remind everyone of this prophesy, and to show Jesus as that long-awaited king riding into Jerusalem. But Jesus was not the kind of king everyone was expecting.

Questions for Discussion:

1) What do you think of when you hear the words from the verse in Zechariah?

2) How is Jesus different than the kind of king we often think of?

3) When have you done things differently than people expected you to do them? What was that like?
